The thing with this question that makes it hard is that different guitarists have different styles. The genre matters for sure in this question. So I cannot give you just one great guitarist. I have to list many. That being said, my personal fave is Eric Clapton. Other good ones are Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Rae Vaughn(sp), Steve Vei, Slash, John Mayer, and also a really good one from long long ago is Andre Segovia. I did a report on him and it was a lot of fun. Anyways I hope you have fun with this... I love learning about the history of music so hopefully you will too. Peace.

So many to choose from...but Hendrix was definitely the greatest rock guitarist in the past and Jeff Beck is the greatest living rock guitarist. Beck can play fast, has awesome tone, can slide with the best and uses his fingers and whammy to play the most wonderful swells and swoops.
He has real strength is his beautiful, voice-like melodic playing on ballads. When you hear him play "People Get Ready", "Cause We've Ended as Lovers", "The Final Peace" and "A Day in the Life", you can will hear the most startling, lyrical playing ever. Then when you want to rock out - put on some "Rice Pudding", "Beck's Bolero", and his blues/electonica savaging of "Rollin' and Tumblin'". Then you can go back to The Yardbirds and see why their peak was the 18 months he was the lead guitarist of the band!

A lot of people will fight over this topic to no end...i can list you some of the greats from past and present
Past:
Randy Rhoads (Guitarist for Ozzy Ozborn)
Jimmy Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Present:
Zakk Wylde (Guitarist for Ozzy, current, black label society)
Dimebag Darrel (i know he's dead, but he's still this era)
George Lynch (he's up there)
Synyster Gates (he's better than most these days)
Herman Li (The man can play...and fast)
Matt Heafy (listen to trivium sometimes...the dude's got skills)
Dave Mustaine (Still a legend in my eyes)
Joe Satriani
ok, so i couldn't think of that many past...but only because i don't remember names unless i listen to them constantly
