How was life like for slaves during the 1850s in the united States?

As crappy as it was in the 1840's and the 1830's. As the tensions between North and South increased in the pre-war era, life got worse for slaves. The Fugitive Slave Law as part of the Compromise of 1850 meant that escaped slaves would be hunted down more easily, and the Dred Scott decision by the US Supreme Court essentially said that even spending time in free territory didn't mean that a slave was free.

Can't really answer your question because I wasn't around at that time. Nor was anyone else who answers your question.

However, my guess is that slavery in the south was pretty brutal for most; long working hours, lousy food, poverty, health problems, being removed from the homeland. In plain simple words, it was a time many of our ancestors were inhumane to fellow man who happened to have a different skin color.
