The first ever to skip college and play in the NBA was Darryl Dawkins in 1974 by the 76ers. He helped lead the 6ers to the NBA title in 1977.

In 1975, Bill Willoughby was drafted in the second round by Atlanta but never really amounted to anything.

Moses Malone was another that never played in college. He signed to play with Utah in the ABA and later in the NBA in 1976.

Shawn Kemp didn't play in college and was drafted by Seattle in 1989. Kemp had signed to go to Kentucky, but had to sit out his freshman year. He then decided to turn pro, and helped bring Seattle to the forfront of the league in the mid-90's.

In the modern era, Kevin Garnett was the first in 1995. He was taken #5 by the T-Wolves. In 1996, Kobe Bryant was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets at #13 and Jermaine O'Neal the same year by Portland.

Kwame Brown was the first high schooler to be taken #1 in 2001. LeBron James (2003) and Dwight Howard (2004) have also been #1 picks out of high school.
