They were innovators. The ancient greeks used mathematics to explain the universe. They were pretty much the first scientists. The Renaissance in Europe owes almost everything to the ancient Greeks because they found out how to translate ancient Greek, so they were able to unlock works that opened up art and science to the modern world.

The ancient Greeks deeply valued education. They enjoyed sitting around discussion "questions about life", speculating answers, debating, and figuring out mathematical formulas to use in society. The Greeks were probably one of the first societies in Europe that believed that teachers should be payed and taken care of the state because they enrich the lives of society. Socrates was one of these.
Greek mythology also says a lot about ancient Greece. Ancient Greeks believed that the things that happen in nature were the result of planetary movements, and those "planets" are in fact "the gods". As a contrast to the God in Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam), Greek gods are not holy and righteous--in fact many of them do cheat, lie, covet, kill, and commit adultery.
Many of the Greeks' speculations about answers in life turn into this branch of science called "philosophy" or literally, "the love of wisdom".
The Ancient Greek language leaves a very rich vocabulary in most European languages today.
The Ancient Greeks were also a very hierarchical society... people were either very rich or a slave to some rich family. Slaves were not even considered human.

We leave it up to other countries.
They seem to be doing a great job, and we only refer to the ancients in a very abstract way.
In fact, if you ask the average person over say,45, here in Greece about it they'll say
" yes, the ancients were awesome, they did something - I'm not sure what- but the Parthenon has got something to do with it!
Something about them doing something with the sciences..."

Amongst their major contributions must be that they were able to distinguish between two notions. I know and I believe.
That alone allowed for the creation of the true nature of science uninhibited by religion and free from it.
