I have to write an essay on this, and I can't really think of anything. Does anyone have any ideas?

(please no lawyer-bashing comments)

A skilled lawyer protects the interests of his/her client. If an adversary is dealing with a good lawyer they know that they are wise to deal in a honest and forthright manner. Whether is a over-zealous prosecutor as in the Duke Lacrosse Rape fiasco, or a Husband trying to intimidate and bully his wife in a divorce case, Good lawyers when matched with good prosecutors and judges, make the legal system fair and accessible to the people. For this to happen we need to hold lawyers in high esteem and hold them to high standards. That said, when they violate the public trust, they should pay the price.

They diagnose, treat, cure and prevent problems. And like any other profession, there are good ones and bad ones.

People aren't always sure what their rights are, what the law is, and how it applies to them and their situation. Lawyers are able to listen to people's needs/problems and apply the law to help them assert their rights, defend their rights, or plan/structure their affairs to protect their rights.

They help to keep the government fair and the people civil. William Shakespeare once said "If you want to start a dictatorship, the first thing you will need to do is kill all the lawyers."

Take from that what you will.

They're representatives and advisors. They're the experts we turn to concerning our legal rights and responsibilities. They insure we achieve the optimal legal standing we can, just like CPAs and financial planners do for our economic standings.

I'm not sure most do. I think all they do is provide a service for hire, that we are forced to have because courts don't respect pro-se litigants. And they have a knowledge of law and can protect our rights in a lot of cases.
