You cant run away from yourself. You are there all the time. So to a certain extent, you are self centered.
The answer to this question is simple. Try spending more time thinking about other people and other peoples' problems than your own.
By doing the foregoing, believe it or not, you come up with projects to help others. This takes your mind off yourself.
Pretty soon you'll get the hang of being humble and modest. Wonderful traits if you want to raise kids. By definition, if you have them, they mean more to you than anything you want.

Yes, you can. One thing that made me self-centered (and still does) is my assumption that I'm right, you're wrong, and it's your fault.
So whenever someone criticized me or gave me an option to take something lesser, I back down remind myself to think the best of the person concerned. That helps me to like the person better, at least for a moment, and make a decision that will benefit them, and just maybe me along the way.
Much luck finding your answer. =)

Of course you can change this. Try to stop and think about your actions and words and try to include how others feel and their needs. It's important to sometimes put others needs and wants before your own. The more you do this you will find that people have a positive reaction toward you and I think it will also make you feel better about yourself.

You could try volunteering at a food bank, or in a hospital, when you see how fortunate you are, and how good you have it compared to some other people, you will have more compassion for others less fortunate.

You can start by listening to what others say to you. Just ponder over what people say. If it's some kind of criticism use it to your advantage.
