Typically the ovaries in your uterus produce just one egg each month when you ovulate. If you don't conceive a baby that month, the egg is shed in your next period. If you do conceive, then you have no periods for the next 9 months.
At conception the sperm fertilizes the egg and a human life comes into being. The sperm is helped into the uterus by means of the cervical mucus which a woman produces during ovulation. Each sperm has a "tail" on the end which helps it "swim" into the uterus.
