many black people aren't thrilled about 'african american' i think it should just be your home country, where you grew up and have citizenship. I saw russians living as chinese in china. The proper way is that they are chinese unless immigrants or only there for a short time. but i believe they were local. Born in a chinese hospital, crap in a chinese toilet and had no ticket to another country for any reason.
America is so diverse, those russian girls in my english class in china were russians to thier classmates, regardless of where they were born or what they spoke. Here we have many different types of americans, (and try to include them?) although we only name the ones not white, you don't hear german american or french american, or english american. at least they get an american hyphen but does it include them or does it hold them at arms length me wonder.

A person who is from Africa and is still a citizen of an African country is properly referred to as an African.
A person who is from Mexico and is still a citizen of Mexico is properly referred to as a Mexican.
I don't call anyone at all an African American or a Mexican American. That is horse s h i t . When I deem it necessary to denote race in a conversation, I describe a black person as a black person, and an hispanic person as an hispanic person.

good lord! you will never satisfy 100% of people, so just stop trying! most blacks are not offended if they are called black or african american. i dont think whites would like it if you started calling them peach or cream. that is just weird. everything in the world isn't perfect, so just accept these things and move on

I've always called them black people and black people always called me white.
Works for us. Everyone knows what you mean anyway when you say "white" and "black."

You have presented a good point.
The information found in the links
below provide more information
on this as well -- particularly in
regards to the so-called "black"
Americans (most of whom
are actually of an MGM-Mixed /
Mixed-Race ancestral lineage):
