I saw the refs call some sort of foul for "illegal defense"... at least that is what it was called by the TV announcers. What is this?

An illegal defense is not a foul but an infraction or violation called on a team when a defensive player stays inside the shaded area for 3 seconds while he's more than six feet away from the opposing player he's guarding. This rule discourages zone defense, that is, guarding territory instead of body, because NBA rules emphasize man-to-man guarding. A second infraction is an automatic technical foul, which entitles the aggrieved party to one free throw plus possession. This rule, however, is absent in international play because zone defense is the mode in there.

It was changed during the 2001-2002 season which eliminated the illegal defense violation in favor of a defensive 3 second violation. Illegal defense was basically one that a defensive player didn't stick to his man and trying to double team someone without the ball. That was when zone defense was not allowed in the NBA.
