The dufus who posted an answer above me doesn't represent how most Texans feel. Most Texans are proud that their President is George Bush, Jr. and he so happens to be from Texas. So, please ignore the ignoramus above me.
In answer to your questions it all depends on what college you plan on attending in Texas. Since Texas is such a BIG state many things change from city to city. But one thing is common throughout, Texans are proud of Texas.
University of Texas in Austin is nice. However, I caution you, UT is extremely liberal and so is most parts of the city of Austin. I've heard many liberals say that Austin is becoming more liberal than NY or San Francisco. The climate in Austin can get extremely HOT in summer and stays moderate throughout the winter months. Lots to do in Austin. Music, bars, clubs, etc. People overall are friendly. Traffic is HORRIBLE! Like all cities in Texas, mosquitoes are bad.
Texas A&M in College Station is a cool place. Much more conservative but a lot less to do. Great heritage and history at A&M. The people are much more friendly than at UT. If you go to Texas A&M you MUST visit the Dixie Chicken. One of the oldest and finest eating establishments in College Station. The weather in College Station is HUMID!
North Texas University in Denton is a fine arts school but is also liberal. Denton is a nice small town and the people are friendly. Gets very hot during the summers with temperatures hovering in the 100s all summer long. Denton is just 20 minutes from Dallas/Ft. Worth and there is plenty to do there. Dallas is where I live. We get some snow during the winter months, but the whole city shuts down. Dallas/Ft. Worth is the best metropolitan area in Texas to live.
University of Houston in Houston. Yuck! Very humid and full of many mosquitoes. Muggy weather and the city seems like it's getting tired. The nightlife is good. Houston is the 4th largest city in the U.S. It has a fine economy (primarily OIL) and seems to be growing larger. It has a large hispanic population and overall it is a conservative city. Traffic is horrendous. Houston does have a tendency to get severe flooding at times and will experience a hurricane or two every ten years or so.

The heat is probably the worst thing about Texas. I think it is every bit as hot here as the other places you mentioned, and if you live on the gulf side, very humid. And we get all those bad storms too. Winter is a nice break from the heat.
The people are nice, that's true. They do have southern hospitality going for them.
Austin is probably the favorite city among Texans. It is definately the most liberal, and has the largest university. I live in Houston, which the state's largest city, and have gotten used to it. Living in the Montrose neighborhood is the best part of the city, in my opinion. The University of St. Thomas is located here, and Rice University is nearby (an easy bike ride). The community here is growing, and has a good feel to it. There is a free museum (the Menil Colllection), a few small parks, several unique shops, and nightlife.
Galveston is cool for its historic areas, but the beach is disappointing.
I've heard good things about College Station (Texas A&M).
Places to avoid in Texas would be: Dallas, Orange, Zapata, Vidor, and probably Beaumont.
Oh yeah, the bugs... roaches can be a problem, mosquitos are terrible near the gulf area, and watch out for fire ants.

I have a condo in San Antonio, and I love the city. Great people, out of the hurricane and tornado belts, No weird bugs or animals. It is the best place I've lived in the United States. It gets hot in the summer, may snow a bit every couple of years, but everyplace has air conditioning and heat. And there are excellent colleges and universities there.

I have lived in Dallas, TX - Austin, TX - Boston, MA - Toronto, CA - East Africa and China and I've visited over seventeen countries. TEXAS IS GREAT!!!!! I do not reccommend living in Dallas but Austin is a beautiful city with lots of nature. The people are great - everyone takes enormous pride in where they live.
It does get hot in the summer time but it is not as bad as Arizona. After your first year, you adjust. There are many wonderful swimming holes to cool down in.
No hurricanes or Tornados. Austin does have enormous cockroaches, they're icky but harmless. Austin also has loads of culture. I went to college there for four years. Every year there was more to learn, discover and enjoy.
If you're lucky you'll pick up a southern drawl!

Texas is a very large state and the climate varies tremendously by area. Northwest Houston is a great place to live - it gets very hot and humid in the summer but winters are GREAT. Dallas actually gets snow in the winter!! What areas were you considering?

My take on Texas--
Hotter than hell and humid, to boot.
Provincial, bull-headed, poorly educated Republicans everywhere.
There was tons of snow in west Texas this past winter.
They have a real problem with wild pigs.
Loaded guns are allowed everywhere.
They have hurricanes and tornadoes.
California is not humid anywhere, and it's never too hot near the coast.
People generally are open-minded.
We don't have weird bugs, wild pigs, hurricanes, or tornadoes.
We have earthquakes once in a while, but they are rarely big enough to be dangerous.
I guess you know where my bias is!
