If you will "add details" to your Q - The date(s) you need - the amenities you're most interested in - What's "affordable" to you? > I will make a couple of recommendations.

If you avoid special events, large conventions and weekends you can save a lot of money.

The best thing to do, is book your room as far in advance as possible, then keep on looking all the way up you leave, for a better deal. Book the room through the hotel, you only use the travel sites to compare rates, many LV hotels will price match the online travel sites.

We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more and have for over 20 years.

PRIMM, Nevada is almost 45 miles south of Las Vegas. There are three nice places namely: Whiskey Pete's, Buffalo BILL'S and PRIMM Valley Resort. The rooms cost $20+ during the week, and, a little more during the weekend. There are double beds, pool and hot tubs, roller coaster rides and more. Also, there is a huge outlet mall with name brand discount stores including: coach, Wilson's leather, gap bananna republic and others. There is a tram operated that travels between the three resorts as well as suttle buses that run all night. It is located in the desert and a nice quiet place for gambling. One must either have a vehicle or auto rental in advance and driving is about 40 minutes from Las Vegas. The food is good..prime rib meals about $6.95 per person as advertised at PRIMM. There are a few places like JEAN and one can drive to the HOOVER DAM, Laughlin, or Death Valley or other scenic routes. Rentals at National, Budget, or like. You can call TRAVELOCITY at 888-291-1757, Expedia, ... for airfare deals. This is the most economical way to go..drive to 15 South at 50-70 miles per hour as posted. It is a nice easy drive to PRIMM Valley..There is a Subway sanwich place with other fast food resturants at the food court. Also buffet food is plentiful and good for $10.00. Good luck, and enjoy yourself.

I've stayed at Harrahs (nice rooms and location), Tropicana (needs updating) and NY-NY (very nice rooms and location with excellent restaurant choices). NY-NY is at the intersection of Las Vegas and Tropicana with easy access to MGM, Excaliber, Monte Carlo, Lexor, & Mandalay Bay.
Harrahs is next door to The Venetian & across the street from Mirage but bit of a walk to other hotels. But if you want to get away from the strip Red Rock hotel and casino is great with an excellent choice of restaurants and a very nice spa.

OK, Harrah's is the place! Why? It is close to every hot spot and it won't cost you a fortune. If you gamble, Harrah's Party Pit is the ultimate in excitement. Everybody is singing, laughing and cheering when they get a good hand and the whole table erupts when the dealer busts. I've played at most the casino's on the strip, now I only play at Harrahs!

Do not go too cheep. Some of those places can be scary. Check out the travel section of Yahoo and see what they say.

for hotels on the strip, try the Stratosphere or the Sahara... they are usually pretty reasonable... if you like Chinese food go to P.F. Chang's...the food is excellent and reasonably priced.... the Mexican restaurant in Sunset Station is pretty good, and the breakfast buffet at Sunset Station is awesome
