In Win XP, in the Screensaver option, under the Power option. They allow you to turn off your monitor and hard disk after a period of time. I wonder how is it different from the standby mode? I have tried setting the hard disk to be turned off after a period and downloading still can resume. Let say if you are downloading a file from a website.

I also read from wikipedia that turning off the LCD monitor instead of putting it into screensaver could prolong the life of the LCD. Is it true?

I've had downloading resume from a forced Standby, however, since there is hard disk activity during a download it should not go into Standby on its own.

Turning it off will certainly prolong the life of the back light on an LCD monitor.
Will it be significant ?
Not unless you like to leave the screen saver running overnight "every" night.

LCDs have an exceptionally long lifespan so I personally would not lose any sleep over it.

If you're downloading a file, then you're hard drive is not inactive. Just because YOU arn't using the hard drive, doesn't mean the computer isn't. Once the computer is done with the hard drive, THEN the timer starts.

But about you're main question - Standby mode, or "sleep", turns off you computer. But instead of closing out all the programs and dumping the memory, it saves its current activity and shuts down, to resume at that point later.

Ok, an analogy: You're studying for a test. You're really tired, so you put your head down on the desk and take a nap. You just put yourself in to standby mode. You didn't do all the things you normally do before bed, shower, brush teeth, change clothes, you just stopped what you're doing, took a nap, and then picked up where you left off.

Now you're probably wondering, "Why don't I just put my computer into standby mode all the time, instead of turning it off?" The answer is simple. When you shut the computer down, it allows it to clear the temporary memory and performs important tasks. Its the same thing as the sleep analogy. You NEED to shower, brush you're teeth and change clothes. Its actually BAD for you not to.

Go to the Control Panel to difference it. I put out of your mind what choice it's in view that I should not have it on my PC at paintings. But if you happen to do a seach underneath "Help" on your begin menu for "standby", it'll let you know how one can disable it.
