President Bush and Congress awarded the Tuskegee Airmen one of the nation's highest honors Thursday for fighting to defend their country even as they faced bigotry at home.

"For all the unreturned salutes and unforgivable indignities ... I salute you for your service to the United States of America," Bush told the legendary black aviators, standing in salute as some 300 of them stood to return the gesture.

At a ceremony in the sun-filled Capitol Rotunda, Bush then joined congressional leaders and other dignitaries in awarding the veterans — most of them in their 80s — the Congressional Gold Medal.

I'm not sure what your feelings are about this, but I think it's awesome and well, over due!

Long overdue. I'm just glad that some of those brave patriots were still alive to receive the recognition.

Not everyone chose to fight in a war overseas for a country that didn't even see them as men worthy of equality at home

Color or race should not figure in the awards. Whether you are white or black, you do what you believe to be the best and wounds or death come as hard for one as for the other. This action on the part of Bush is like kissing babies to win votes and to give a sense of warmth, not through sincerity. Now it has only been 50 years....who is pulling your leg? I can not say enough good about my black friends in Vietnam, they were as good as any other loyal American but for 50 years, the government ignored men and suddenly the government puts a little Band-aid on an old scar. Seems to me a little too late to give credit where it was due...remembering that most of those men are moldering in their graves.

I agree with you 100 percent. Have you done research on the Tuskegee Airmen? If you haven't, you should. You will shocked by what they were put through by the Government, not only the bigots at home. Actually, it wasn't enough, but they got some kind of recognition finally.

You are absolutely right. The honor is long overdue. Anyone who reads history and has seen the very well done movie, Tuskeegee Airmen, knows that these brave men were just as devoted to fighting for their country as anyone. Thanks go to Bush for honoring these folks.

yes it is well overdue... they fought just as hard for their country as anyone else.

However, i wonder why Bush decided to do this at this time, you know that in politics everything happens for a reason, something to think about. But im just glad they were finally recognized for their accomplishments.

I agree - it was about time. All veterans must be honored. I am so glad that we have such wonderful young men and women serving in our armed forces today. They make us proud. They are the best!
