Reverse pressure or backflow pressure on the sensor in the fuel pump line on the nozzle. It pushes against the flow valve sensor.

A sensor in the nozzle end of the hose senses when gas is in contact with it and shut off the delivery flow. It is a safety thing, like when you are filling up and washing your windshield while the gas is pumping. If you are at the front of the car and it is full, without the shut-off gas would run out on the ground.
