Now, there were Two alliances in WW1. lets keep it basic for your answer.
the Entente Alliance (France,Britain, and Russia) was formed because these countries were afraid of a powerful Germany.Once it became clear Germany wanted a Navy,Britain pushed for this treaty. Now,heres your Answer:

The Central Powers alliance,Germany/Austria-Hungary dated from the 1870s.Germany began to restrengthen the alliance once it saw the Entente alliance come together in 1914. Germany also got Turkey and Bulgaria to come to the Central Powers side. Heres a link for you, check it for yourself.

Julia, you need to look back about 30 years or so before the war began... Look up Otto von Bismarck and the Triple Entent.
It was a time of expansion for a great many countries. von Bismarck was the Chancellor of Germany and was about to get ousted after a great many years of loyal and faithful service. He had previously stated that "Germany's interests lie in Germany" and that he was not up for the idea of the land grabbing that the other world powers were doing in Africa and elsewhere. Seeing that he was about to be given the boot, he attempted to show how indespensable he was and began a rapid series of diplomatic maneuvers that formed a great many of the alliances you now ask about. The alliances essentially state that if you are attacked, I have your back and if I am attacked, I can count on you to do the same. In the end, you'll find a tangled web of everyone agreeing to cover one another. All it took then, was one (actually several) bullet to kill Arch Duke Ferdinand (and his wife) to throw the whole (civilized?) world into war.

Germany was involved with the people they were involved with because they had treaties with them and Germany was greedy for some land. Germany had a treaty with Austria-Hungary. Germany was also in an Arms Race with the british. Imperialism was a HUGE part of WW1

Industrial strength, military potential, aggressive leader -->led to alliances

The three main causes of World War I were nationalism, the system of alliances and military plans, and Germany’s yearning to dominate Europe.

A Serbian shot the Austrian archduke. Austria demanded that Serbia be punished. Russia said that the Serbs were their brothers and that Austria should not punish them. Austria asked Germany to be on its side.

Remember both Austria and Germany speak German.
