Im having alot of trouble thinking of an obscure, artsy, costume idea for a Halloween Revisited party. Im a 16 year old girl, and it has to be portable to school. Something cool!!!

Mary Pickford is sadly rather obscure now
other options not necessarily obscure but definitely fun:
Janis Joplin
Diana Ross
Cher
Georgia O'Keeffe
Frieda Kahlao (sp!)
Twiggy
Annette Funicello
Sally Bowles (from Cabaret)
Martha Graham
Annie Oakley
Blondie
Cyndi Lauper
Camille Claudelle
Mary Cassate
The Mona Lisa
Sally - from Nightmare Before Christmas
Carly Simon
Oh dear - you weren't terribly specific with artsy . . . so hopefully I covered enough.

I'd do a character from a play. Like Les Mes, Phantom, Cats, etc. Or if you've got long enough hair, Marie Antoinette. Or a blue haired lady with a beehive. Or one of the "artsy" movies if there was something at the Festivals in the last few years that really caught your eye.

Or do Guy Fawkes (if you arent in UK thats rather obscure)

Or Bob Ross "The Joy of Painting" guy who always did "happy lil trees" though it was probably before your time.

I guess its what you define as "artsy" cause you could always be more creative and do someTHING instead of someone. Many of my friends costumes (a bag of jellybeans, an M&M, a nightstand) that were easy wouldn't be very comfortable for wearing around all day at school.

I think creativity is what matters here if you wish to stand out. In order to be comfortable at school all day, many of your classmates are probably going to do the simple stuff. A black eye and a P on their chest. Clark Kent. wear all black and be a shadow, or a ninja, or midnight. The preps are going to wear their jock uniforms (or which with a friend) and come as a cheerleader, a soccer player, etc. Many will be wearing an NBA, NHL, NFL jersey. My suggestion is if you pick something too obscure though to wear one of those "Hello My Name Is" stickers to that you won't have to answer all day long "what are you suppose to be?"

Halloween Revisited huh? Hmm you could take the theme a lil more literal and do something more like Halloween back in the day. Check out the origins of Hallween. Or a lil more "day of the dead" inspired if you want to go the hispanic route.

It really just depending on how you define "artsy" and you have to figure out the line between a great creative costume and having to wear it in school all day, while being able to perform normal activities (fitting in a bathroom stall, sitting at your desk, being able to move your hands to write and carry your book bag) Hope these suggestions might have helped.

Here's one I've always wanted to do: speed bump.

Get yourself some foam rubber (or even cardboard), paint it yellow, and then squeeze yourself inside.

It's so mundane, it's pretty artsy.

Of course, the "ex-wife" from Mean Girls is kinda neat, too.

Be this guy! http://ww.cultkanaal.nl/Kunst/magritte-son-of-man1964.jpg

Though I doubt a whole lot of people would know what you were... there aren't a whole lot of teenage Magritte fans.
