Although individual hairs are translucent and clear, the hairs together scatter light just as clear water droplets in a cloud do or sugar grains in a bowl. As the light they are scattering is white light from the sun, the fur appears white. The same scattering makes the snow (made of clear ice crystals) the polar bears are walking on appear white.

A polar bear's fur is actually translucent. Almost like your fingernails.. this allows light to pass through it like a magnifying glass to keep the bear's skin warm. The skin is black, but doesn't really show up under all the fur.

What makes a polar bear white is the polar bears fur! Wait until you shave one polar bear becomes bald and angry! then you had better run like you never have before.

A polar bear's fur is actually clear and hollow. Being hollow allows them to insulate themselves with the warm air from their body heat. They are white because the white from their skin and sun reflects in their fur.

They are actually not white at all. Their fur is translucent, or clear and appears white due to the refraction of light within each hair. A couple of the other people who posted answers were pretty close, but didn't go all the way, kinda' like my past girlfriends!

polar bears have fur which are transparent in colour... thats why it will appear white since they live in areas of snow... its the reflection of the colour of the white snow... in singapore zoo, where the polar bears are kept in sandy/rocky areas, their fur appear to be yellowish in colour because it reflects the colour of the rocks... so the colour actually depends on the colour of the habitat it lives in...

Natural selection has allowed them to have fur without pigmentation, in order to be camouflaged in the snow and ice.
