The reason for this is that the fluid in the bladder creates a "window" for the beam to pass through. (This provides a good medium for sound conduction.) It also serves as a "landmark" for the technician to get their bearings, so to speak. In addition, a full bladder can change the position of the uterus, taking the flexion out of it and pushing it up so it is easier to scan. A full bladder also moves loops of bowel up and out of the way to make the pelvic organs easier to view

Ultra sounds means that they use "sound" to take pictures of what is happening inside uterus, and bladder area. In order to generate clear pictures they need your bladder to be completely filled with water. Sound travels through water at speeds which are conducive to record these images of your insides. Whereas without this water it would have to filter through water and air and thus the visuals of the ultra sound tests will be blurry and useless.

I have an ultra sound next week and I asked my dr the same question. It is so they can see the bladder and not confuse it with other organs in your body.

A full bladder acts as an echo-lucent window for the ultrasound to pass through. Ultrasound doesn't go through air (as in the bowels) well but transmits perfectly through liquid (as in the case of the urine in the bladder).

Hmmm, every ultrasound I have ever had (7 of them) the tech asked me if I needed to go first. I could not imagine why you would need a full bladder.

Well I have only had a few ultrasounds done. I had one done for ovarian cysts and my bladder had to be full for that one. When I had my first ultrasound done during my pregnency they asked me if I had to go before they started. I guess it all depends on what they are going to look at.
