wldcts has the only plausible answer!!
1. ants can live for three weeks submerged in water!! you can't drown them....
2. lighting gas is stupid and dangerous,, and would only harm the ones on the surface!
3. there is only one home remedy that is not useless or dangerous and most people can't or won't do it,, and that is to dig in the nest and destroy the queen herself!! most people don't even know what one looks like...
4. the best solution is a bait that is taken in to be eaten by the queen!!! you have to get rid of her and the nest will die!!
if you get such a bait read the instructions.... most tell you DO NOT disturb the nest,, just sprinkle it around the nest,, the ants will eat it later,, if you bother the nest and then put the poison down the ants will think it had something to do with the disturbance and discard it!!!!!!!!!

The easiest way is to spray them with an ant killer. It only kills the ones on the surface though. If you buy an ant poison and mix it with things like honey and wet catfood they will take it back to their colony and feed it to all of them and eventually kill the queen. I mention honey and catfood because you probably don't know if they are sweet eating ants or meat eating ants. Put a little of each out and the one that goes missing first will let you know which kind they are.

Go to a hardware and get some ant bait and sprinkle it around each ant hill. They will take this back into the colony mounds and consume it. Then they will die.

Get a chemical for it. I prefer a poisonless chemical because they have less of an odor and are better for the environment. Runoff isn't potentially dangerous to water supply. I know that ACE hardware has begun to promote a line of "Green Products" that are all natural and good for the environment/ ozone layer. (FYI, they also promote energy saving products) If you really don't care about this like alot of other people Torro makes a good and killer.

Sprinkle some Seven-5 podwer on your lawn. It kills ants & other insects but is safe for animals & children! You can sprinkle on your doorsteps as well to keep from coming into your house. Good Luck!

Pour really hot salty water on them. It will kill the grass / plants as well though.
Garden centre's should have chemicals to kill them if you want to use them.

Use red ant killer. They do not kill them but chase them to your neighbor's yard. Gas will kill them.
