Sometimes you should listen to answers, sometimes maybe not. Definitely go visit your top choices. The horrible school to some people is the perfect school to others. Just because one person thinks Cornell is terrible doesn't mean it is terrible for you. Actually I think Ithaca is a really interesting community and I know many people who think Cornell is a very special place.

Visit each campus you are considering. If you can, try to make an appointment with a faculty member in the area you want to study. Walk around campus, sit in a coffee shop, browse the bookstore. Maybe go to a lecture or special event. Can you picture yourself in that atmosphere for four years?

Only you can tell if a school feels like a "right fit" for you, and no matter how prestigious it is, or how great it looks on paper, there's nothing better than physically going there to help make that determination.

I have known people that have gone to cornell and they did not like it at all. My sister went to Dartmouth and she absolutely loved it....even thought it was in the middle of nowhere. Cornell is in a terrible town, the weather is horrid, and many people there have had bad experiences. I would wait to see if you get accepted to the places at which you were waitlisted and then make your decision. Out of the 3 you were accepted at, my personal favorite is Vanderbilt. I applied to all of the ones you applied to and visited all of them. My thoughts of them/rankings: 1. Dartmouth, 2. Columbia, 3. Vandy, 4. UM, distant 5. Cornell

Unless you like Dartmouth much better than Cornell, this seems obvious. Accept Cornell. Then you will be going somewhere you like, and you can stop stressing about it.

Visit them, silly! Even if you've already been, go to the accepted students weekend that the colleges host. That's how I decided to actually turn down Columbia. I thought I would definitely go there when accepted, but after visiting, I hated it, so I went to an engineering school on a full scholarship, and I'm so much happier. An overnight with a student host does wonders for the decision-making process.
