It is approximately 480 miles from Los Angeles, California, to San Francisco, California. Allowing for various traffic conditions, a driver can average approximately 60 miles per hour.
(a)How far have you traveled after 3 hours? (Show how it is worked)
(b)How far have you traveled after 4 hours? (Show how it is worked)
(c)How far have you traveled after t hours (i.e., write a linear function that expresses the distance traveled, d, as a function of time, t).
(d)How far will you HAVE LEFT to travel to reach San Francisco after you have traveled 3 hours? (Show how it is worked out)
(e)How far will you HAVE LEFT to travel to reach San Francisco after you have traveled 4 hours? Show how it is worked out)
(f)How far will you HAVE LEFT to travel to reach San Francisco after you have traveled t hours (i.e., write a linear function that expresses the distance to be traveled to reach San Francisco, s, as a function of time, t).

Use the equation d = r t.

d is the distance traveled.
r is the rate of travel (i.e miles per hour).
t is the time (in hours) the car is moving.

For parts "a" and "b," just multiply r by t to find d.

I believe we have already answered part "c" by using the equation above.

For part "d," you know the distance to San Francisco. Use the answer from part "a" to find the distance left to travel by subtracting it from the total distance to San Francisco.

Do the same thing for part "e" that you did for part "d." But use the answer from part "b" to find the remaining distance.

If you do parts "d" and "e," you will know what the equation expressing the distance remaining should be:

distance remaining = distance to San Francisco - distance traveled.

Use the variable "s" given by the book to represent the remaining distance and those we have used here to find the distance already traveled.
