It doesn't seem to make sense that they are giving away FREE tickets to everyone on opening weekend of this film. Also, I have seen no advertisements for the film. I don't think this has ever happened before. Seems like a lot of money to lose on opening weekend of a film.

Best Buy sponsored the "free tickets" but even it they had not, it was a smart move on the part of the promoters even if they hadn't for several reasons and for not dumping advertising dollars into promoting it:

1) The movie is hard to describe in a print media summary that would motivate the movie going audience to chose it over the vast amount of other films as it is hard to categorize. When I read the summary after printing out the free tickets, I though it sounded lame and the only excuse to go was I was going to be able to see if for free.

It is thought-provoking, powerful movie, and promotion via word of mouth by the people who have seen is going to farther that advertising dollars would ever.

2) To promote the film in the media would have detracted from the message and meaning of the movie. The director of the movie, Victor Salva, is controversial and even actively boycotted by people and groups as he is a convicted child molester. The focus would have more likely fallen on the director and his past than where it should be...the movie and the message itself.

They did something similar with Cinderella Man. Cinderella Man didn't do as well as expected so they did a promotion where, if you didn't like the movie you could get your money back no questions asked.

This movie opened last year and didn't make a blip. But the studio thinks it's a good project so they're reopening it.

Basically, the studio thinks if people see it they will give the movie good word of mouth and after opening weekend, it would have a bigger audience than if there was no word of mouth to begin with.

Well, look at it this way. By giving away free tickets they've now got YOU posting about it on a highly visited website and causing discussion of a movie no one had heard of. They're not gonna lose a penny! :-)
I had a look at the trailer they emailed me yesterday and this looks like it's gonna be a really, really interesting and uplifting drama! I'd never known about it until this free give away. And without this attention, I would've easily forgotten about it. I certainly wouldn't have watched the movie trailer based on anything apparent. But, the promotion got my interest up just enough to watch the trailer. The trailer has my interest up enough now that I MUST see this movie! :-)

I think someone figured out it's cheaper to give away free tickets for a weekend and generate word-of-mouth advertising than to actually buy tv air time and magazine ads.

I went today because, yes, I had one of the free tickets and I liked it enough to recommend it to friends who, unfortunately, won't be going for free.

They hope that word-of-mouth will create enough buzz that you will tell your friends and pay to see this film a second time

It was out before...no one saw it. So they're reopening it so they can get the $$$$
