Scientific Research is all fine and dandy but spending 30 million to see what Mars looks like is ridiculous considering we have victims of hurricane Katrina still struggling to survive because the Govt didn't get the trailers there to the people like they promised.
I, myself, saw hundreds of FEMA trailers stored on govt property west of Texarkana,Texas It was months after hurricane Katrina before they were being removed from the property.
Where those trailers went is anyone's guess.
Some of those displaced lost everything they owned and then had to battle the insurance companies to get them to pay. That is those who could afford insurance.

Sometimes our govt has it's head screwed on backwards.

I think the money is well spent. Space exploration has provided many benefits here on earth and have improved our lives and the services we enjoy today. You know those little machines people use to check their blood pressure, created by NASA. Nitinol makes wearing braces a bit easier. Scratch resistant glasses are widely used. Heart pacemakers work through electronic monitoring similar to that used to operate satellites orbiting the earth. And these are only the medical benefits. Fabrics, from survival blankets to wraps for water heaters to new types of interior home insulation. Composite materials developed now provide us lightweight, strong materials for helmets, tennis rackets and other sporting goods. Quartz watches and clocks. Even the bar code used in your grocery store is an advancement of technology originally developed by NASA to maintain their huge inventory of parts.

Well, i think space exploration is very important, it seems to have taken a back seat to other "important" things, and for some reason its not exiting to people anymore. If you asked that question 50 years ago, it would be the most exiting thing anyone could think of, like when we landed on the moon.Though i do think that money could be well spent if they gave a small chunk to needy families, and to disease cure research, and a host of other things, the reality is it wouldnt be spent that way, just more money for the president and his war.so just might as well be exited about mars - which i think is cool by the way.

I think space exploration is pretty much useless. If there were anything out there, we would have caught a glimpse of it atleast. And anyone who claims to have been abducted was just high on something or dreamt it. Anyway, that money could help with the social security problems that we are going to have or put it toward cancer research! I'd prefer to save lives rather than look at crappy pictures of a crappy planet...

Science and art are the only things that truly last in this world, and contribute to our greatness as a society. I do not believe it's wise to send PEOPLE to mars, but certainly that amount of money over a long period of time to study a planet which may hold clues to our existence is worthwhile.
