You don't say which way you are coming from but from the east bay the easiest way to get to Japantown from BART is to get off at Montgomery Street walk up to Market Street and catch the 38 Geary right outside the station.

If you are coming up from the south on Bart get off at 16th street Bart Station and catch the 22 Fillmore going toward the Marina.

No, none of the BART stations are close to Japantown.

They should've built a MUNI light rail line in that direction, but they didn't for political reasons. So, you'll have to take the bus.

The most direct route is to get off at Powell Street Station, and board a 38-Geary bus from Union Square.

leave the station at any point. walk to city hall which has a really big dome. then go Van Ness Avenue which is behind city hall. Take either the 47 or 49 bus line towards Fisherman's Wharf. Then get off at Geary and board the 38 Geary and then get off at Webster St.

There is no bart in chinatown, so you probably have to take a taxi.

You can walk up to Geary and Taylor and take the 38 Geary:

But the area around civic center bart and geary and taylor is not so safe. I would take recommend getting off at powell street and catching the 38 Geary from there.
