So ESPN is spreading this garbage, huh? I'll believe that Kobe is the best offensive player in NBA history after he....
- averages and NBA record 50.4 points a game in one season (also holds 2nd with 44.8 and third with 38.4).
- shoots a better FG percentage than his paltry 45%.
- has 4 MVP awards.
- has 7 consecutive 50+ point games (also with streaks of 6 and two of 5).
- scores more than 50 points 45 times in one season.
- has 32 games scoring 60+ points.
- leads the NBA in assists in one season.
- wins Rookie of the Year AND MVP in the same season.
- holds the rookie scoring average record and most points in a season by a rookie and most points in a game by a rookie.
- 9 straight triple-doubles.
- have a "double triple-double" (20+ points, rebounds and assists)
- leads the league in FG% at 72.7% (also second with 68.3%).
THEN we will talk. Until then Wilt Chamberlain is the greatest offensive player of all time. One of the few scoring records Wilt doesn't hold is career scoring average and that ain't Kobe either - it's Jordan. Jordan's average is 30.1, Wilt's is 30.07. Not much difference.

Steve Kerr said that Kobe is probably the best offensive player ever, and I'd agree. Even "Kobe" below admits Jordan was a better defender, though. As for who the better player is overall, it is close.
Remember, the points totals are skewed somewhat by the change in the 3 point line (not entirely, but a little bit). Jordan also had longevity, as he played in college before the days when the NBA drafted straight from high school, and still was above average in his second "comeback." Had he not done that "retirement" in 1994-1995, he might also have won 2 additional championships and scored even more. Kobe still has to prove that he'll be as good at 35 as Jordan was.
Will Kobe be on the next "Dream Team"? If so, that can be another test for him. Far and away, the first was the greatest dream team of all time. If Kobe can lead that team to a "no doubt in anyone's mind Gold", then he'll pick up more support. In the end, both get starting positions on the Dream Team of All Time.
I'd pick Jordan right now, based on his depth of play and ability to adapt to the team around him. Kobe has until the end of his career to change that, and he might. It's too bad he couldn't get along with Shaq. That pair could have gone on to be the greatest of all time. I think the Jordan/Pippen and Stockton/Mallone pairs rank above Kobe/Shaq based on longevity and how complementary each player was to the other.

no question about it, kobe is a better offensive player than jordan. he has a better mid range and 3pt jumper, better ball handling skills, even a better passer.
Jordan was a better lock down defender and rebounder than kobe, dont get me wrong, kobe is a top defender in the league when he wants to be, but jordan imposed his will defensively better than kobe, and kobe imposes his offensive will on anyone.
That being said, both were excellent post players, excellent footwork, great at taking over games.
IMO kobe is a better closer, as phil said, he just smells blood in the water and doesnt let up. Phil also said of kobe he was in a league of his own when comparing him with jodan and wilt after the 4 straight 50+ pt games.
Also keep in mind, jordan may have played in a more physical era, but he was a physical specimen in that era. todays athletes are bigger, stonger, and a lot faster....and kobe looks like a man among kids when he wants to.
ppl forget, jordan was hated when he was younger, called a ball hog ect... People will always hate kobe, for whatever reason, but at the end of the day, to answer your question....kobe is the better player.
....I've got pages i could write on this subject, so if someone says i left something out ect...it's only for sakes of typing.

No matter how much Kobe lovers and the YOUNG fans of today's game want it to be so...it is not. He will never, ever, be as good or complete a player as Jordan was, NEVER!
