It depends what you mean by Ethernet card/port
The first one is for the pc
If you have one put in the computer it should automatically be installed. If not go to control panel > add hardware > it should recognize it. If not control panel > system > hardware (tab at top) > device manager > network adapters > then you can see if it is installed or not
The other one would be a PS2. I'm talking about the first, fat one. Take the big square rectangle cover off and then insert the port. It should work.

They don't need to be activated. Using an account with administrative privileges, go to Start Menu > Control Panel > Network Connection. You should see something like "Local Area Connection..." You can also right click the "My computer" icon on your desktop and select Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > scroll down to Network Adapters....

Open the control panel, doubleclick on the Internet Options icon, when it opens click on the connections tab, and run the "setup" button, you can configure the connection there, or open "start", go up to programs, go up to accessories, then chose Communications, look for the Internet Connection Wizard.

When your computer starts up, press the DEL button or whatever it says to press to go into the MS-DOS Prompt. then go into each file and look for ethernet and highlight it then press enter until it says activated, yes, etc

this is an aotumatic thing that happens. put in the ethnet card. your computer will detect and install drivers for it. at this time it will also assign a com port for it.
