The little speaker in the bottom right corner is down as low as it can go, and some things are still obnoxiously loud through my earphones. Can I turn it down any lower?

start, control panel, volume control, speaker volume or advanced settings and manipulate the master controls on inline settings.

double click the speaker icon and adjust the large audio panel and graphic equalizer,all so on xp i saw a audio section some were in the start program , as i was rummaging thought.

buy a set of $9 dollar ipod speakers and you can Bailey hear them, i had to get 2 wat Sony ones but no power supply so i have to use batteries,with out the batteries Baily hear them.got them a Eckarts drug store

You could turn the volume of your media player down :)

earphones should have volume control, if not tune the wave sound down, in sounds control panel
