Virtual slavery is not confined to capitalistic or democratic countries. My brother in law lives in extremely rural Russia (Bashkortstan) and runs a communal farm (kolchoz). They are only allowed to sell the milk they produce to the regional cooperative, and the price is fixed at a price less than the price of water. Free competition is not allowed. If this is not virtual slavery, I don't know what is.
Why does the government get away with it? They do it because Putin and his KGB cronies have retained power, and there is no real democracy in Russia. The people in this area are forced to vote for Putin's cronies during election times. Someone comes and tells them how to vote, and they do it. Or else!
Power corrupts - no matter which system you are looking at - when there are no checks and balances. Just pick another US president like the one we have now, and you'll wonder where all your civil rights and human rights disappeared to - overnight.

greed, power, wealth combine to make some humans exploit others. almost everybody exploits somebidy else either directly or indirectly. until resources are redistributed there will always be slavery and exploitation. rich people make theitr wealth from the poorer people. likewise rich countries compared to less rich. those with the power and wealth are not willing to see this situation change.

Divide and rule is the name of the game, however things are so divided that no-one trusts anyone and 'i'm alright jack'. Why should i go fight a war for a government that cares for nothing but money.

It's unfortunately the way capitalism works. Look what happens with communism, everybody gets nothing!

It's unfair though.
