Is it OK to run premium gas in my 2006 Honda Shadow 750 or will it cause engine knock or backfiring? What is the best gas for it? and during the break in period what is too fast to ride on it?

premium is the best gas for high compression engines, and u will notice a difference if u run cheap gas in it. stay away from the convienence store junk. get only good stuff like shell, mobil, bp. would be best to follow the manual on the break in. check the manual..its in there.

ok to run any octane. My experience though is that yes there is a slight, very slight HP kick but I can say that the higher oct. will most likely burn cleaner as judged by the oil and the milage between changes. Proper oil is in the equation too. The best costs more. You get what u pay for. Acceleration on my R1 is better and the cheap gas seems to register higher temps. Ur call

Yes, premium is OK. Probably the best for it. It will not cause knocking or backfiring. Knock is from too low octane. During break in, don't exceed 75mph in top gear, and only for brief periods. Don't lug it, or over rev it. An '06 is new enough to have an owner's manual. I suggest you find one, it has all this in it, plus your regular maintenance intervals.

My good friend has the same exact bike (gray with flames) and since that's where I learned to ride a bike I can tell you that it makes no difference. We have tried premium and did not do not even made the slightest diff. Manufacture calls for 87 so its really your call.
Now my motorcycle which is a Kawasaki calls for 87 as well. Everyone kept telling me use premium so I did and guess what??? Not a diff either so I'm back to 87 regular.

There are no real benefits to running premium gas on a stock motorcycle or vehicle for that matter unless the manufacturer calls for it. Premium is usually used in situations where you have a higher compression that would require it. If yout bike calls for regular, use regular, for one, it's cheaper, two it won't make your bike run better if you did go to premium, might actually make it worse. Refer to your manual on break in instructions and fuel requirements.

It won't hurt it, but you'll be wasting your money. That engine doesn't need it. It's just an old wives tale that premium is higher quality or has better cleaners. It just burns a little slower so high compression engines that need it will run right.
