I took a lot of communication classes. I also try to listen more and really pay attention to what the person is saying. I try to also listen to my heart and feelings more and try to communicate that. It helps when you speak from the heart. Try it.

I may sound crazy but I have rehearsed conversations even pretending what the other person might say.
Have a list of topics written on a piece of paper before you call. If the conversation lags, just glance at your paper. Make sure the list is about something you are familiar so you can talk about it.
Join the debate club at school. It will help you talk in front of a group.

I am still working on my conversation skills. I work on my telephoning skills by pretending I am on the phone with someone (with a few other people in the room) to monitor and grade what I am doing, and someone pretending to be the other person on the line. If it is just a phone message, I still have a few people monitoring me, and grading me until I get it right.

Practice, plain and simple. I'm not nuts about talking on the phone, but it's not that different from being there in person. Say hi, ask how your friend is doing, throw in questions about their work or studies or family members, or comment on your own life. The rest will flow, and the more you do it, the more natural it becomes.

Just remember people are just people. Getting nervous only makes it harder. They are no better than you. Practice your phone skills by calling a business and just ask them a common question about their product or services.

I've worked in convience stores for most of my life, and until then, I was pretty shy, lol. I lost my shyness inside of my first year. I loved all my years (10 of them) spent behind the counter because clerks become customers friends, navigators (where do YOU stop to ask for directions?) their phsycologists(people will tell a perfect stranger their innermost secrets sometimes before they tell their best friends) and let me tell you, it also improved my memory. You learn to anticipate what certain people want because that is what they usually get.

I learnt mine in the classroom as a teacher. But I had to trip over my tongue a few times before it began happening.
