i want it to process less data but i don't to end critical proccesses so how can i make it less active and not end the programs that i need to use??

info for my pc :pentium 4
CPU : 2.66 GHz
248 mb of ram
windows home edition SP2

Keep in mind that these are more related to memory usage than actual CPU usage (unless an application is open & running).

Try removing any unnecessary TSRs (terminate & stay resident programs).
These usually load when Windows starts & are often displayed as small icons near the clock on your taskbar.

If you see that you CPU is overly active although you are not running anything then further investigation is needed.

For example, I recently helped a friend whose PC was always at 90% CPU usage .... a real mystery.

After much research I learned that the issue was with PC-Cillin 2007 & it's poor compatability with P4 processors.
We reverted to version 2006 & all was normal.
The PC now runs much much faster.

It's a lot of trial & error & research on possible issues between hardware, OS & certain third party programs.

Right click the center of your desktop screen-click properties-click screen saver-click power-click power schemes-click energy star. This will make your CPU less active.
