there is no set correct answer to this. It widely rages depending on if it was maintained properly ( oil changes on time proper lubricant changes in gearboxes transmission). Another major factor is how the vehicle has been driven. A vehicle that has all highway miles and never gets driven in town will on average last a lot longer that a car that don't know what the highway is and is constantly stop and go in town. Climate is another deciding factor. Although not as much as other factors extreme cold has a tendency to be a bit harder on things. Above any of them it really has more to do with how much your willing to spend to keep it going. Unless it's rusted out to the point where it's falling to pieces or had been unrepairably damaged in an accident if your willing to replace engines and major components it can last for an extremely long time. However the answer your really looking for is more like this. On average today i see many cars making it 300,000 miles before requiring a major component replacement. It is unusual that a well maintained under average driving that a vehicle will fail under 100,000. As for a Taurus of 2002 with 200,000 miles I'd be thinking of trading it off before something major does go unless you are willing to spend a lot of cash to replace major components or face major repair issues. I have well over 10 years in the automotive repair area and this is only my opinion.

Depends on the maintance, I've seen Rangers last for 450 000km, and I've seen Taurus's last over 500 000km, I've seen many Crown Victoria's last over 500 000km, and a few over 700 000km. I've seen F150's last over 500 000km. In the shop I work at, we have a 1989 Ford Crown Victoria with 397 000km on it, and it runs pretty good, for the age, and the milage. Maintance is everything for an engine. If the engine is not maintained, then it won't last long, but if the engine has been maintained the engine will last long. I've seeen many Ford last over 500 000km, they are to most common vehicle I see last over 500 000km. Just for you Ford bashers out there.
An engine will theroetically forever, if its maintained properly, and is given whatever it needs, the biggest killer in engines is non maintance.

Any car will fail if you abuse and neglect it. If you take care of a car it will last a long time. I had a Tercel with 265K on it and it ran fine. My dad had a Dodge Intrepid with over 300K on it and it dosent burn or leak 1 drop of oil. You just have to keep the car tuned up and change the oil every 3K miles.

if the engine is running fine with no major problems, and or any other major mechanical problems to the car and you maintain it then you could get another 100,000 miles out of it. my car only has 170,000 miles on it but because it is completely rusted, with major mechanical problems, will be scraped very shortly.
