Hey all <3 (this is an edited question!)
I'm a Grade 7 and am in my third term in Shop (Woodworking) Class. For the end-of-term project, the class has to go into the shop and make a child's toy. The toy has to be something a 7-year-old would enjoy playing with, with no sharp edges that could harm them.
I have no experience in making toys, I only have a week or two to make this so I can't make a dollhouse or something so elaborate, and I need something simple that would still get me a good mark.
I was thinking of making a duck on wheels or something... but I'd love your ideas. If you have ever done a project like this, or just if you have an idea, PLEASE reply! I'd be soo grateful.
Thanks so much ;)

You should make a little basketball game, where you have a wooden base, wooden pole, wooden cup for a basket.
Attached needs to be a piece of twine, with a wooden ball on the end.
At the bottom there needs to be a slot to fit a plastic spoon handle, so you can "fling" the ball to make a basket.
Good luck and have fun!

7-year olds love colors and shapes. Why not make a toy where they can fit in different shapes into a board. You can make a board with different holes carved into different shapes like a pony, a car, ball, guitar, shoe, dog, etc... don't use the normal square triangle and circle, they're already too common. then make separate figures, those that would fit in the holes. Color the figures and the board using bright shades. That'll sure catch the children's attention.
Just a thought.... Good luck with your project.

How about puzzle ? simple but entertaining. Lay out a sq. and then picture frame it. don't nail it up.fit a square of 1x inside the loose frame. Draw some interlocking shapes on the 1x and cut them out on a band saw or scroll saw fit them back together and then down size the picture frame to fit the new outside dimension of the pieces. Stain the different parts of the puzzle different colors and TA DA ! shop project !

Try a wooden convertable old style car with moving wheels (spokes should be painted rather than made to prevent the wheels from breaking when they pound it like a rock). Maybe a little duck could be the driver or you could make room for their dolls and action figures to be the driver.

well, for a 7 year old, i don't think a duck on wheels is appropriate. how about one of those little games where you have a wooden ball on a string, with the other end tied to a cup, or a peg or something. and you have to swing the ball to get it to land in the cup or on the peg. my 7 year old brother and sister think it's a good idea.

Have you thought about a pinewood derby car? My nephew did one for his Cub Scout Pack. Here is a link to pictures and patterns: http://www.pack271.org/271/PWDerbyPatterns.asp

How about a plane? Fighterjet type? Youcould maybe make it with wheels on the bottom. Our son is eight years old and he loves playing with planes and boats and army guys.
