Last night I posed the question of the Panthers for trading Luongo but how dumb are these 2 teams for not making a trade for a goalie at the deadline.
Both teams are on the play-off bubble DESPITE atrocious goaltending all year. They must have realized that they needed an upgrade and if they did upgrade, they would would have already locked down a play-off spot.
I mean, come on, the Flyers got Biron for a 2nd round pick, in hindsight, I bet that both GM's wish they would have done that deal. Biron is better than the whole pack of them. Holmqvist, Denis, Ward and Grahame have all been liabilities.
It's not just Biron they could have had either, lots of guys were available that would be an upgrade to these teams, someone like CuJo comes to mind.
Those southern GM's are out of their mind these days.
Thoughts?

First guy- Salary cap??? Are you out of your mind? The cap hit for Biron was a measly 400,000. TB has 1.6 million of cap space. Carolina has over 3 million of cap space. Please bring a better argument next time.

I just gave you a trade scenario which WOULD have made those teams better. The GM's WERE dumb not to address their weakness AND you say they don't like to give up young talent. WHAT YOUNG TALENT?? A 2nd round pick in what is widely considered the weakest draft in recent years hardly qualifies as giving up young talent. You don't even have a valid point either. Christ, can anyone make a valid point wothout rambling some incorrect nonsense. I know people like to think I am "opinionated" for my views on things like this, but when a fact is a fact, it is not my opinion, it is , well.......A FACT.
The Forsberg trade was giving up young talent-obtaining a Biron/ Cujo type would have cost very little (a 2nd round pick to be exact)

VIP- excellent answer- I was thinking this as I was asking the question. Not as if Biron could bite them in their rear with the Flyers not being in the play-offs- ALTHOUGH, if they upped the ante with a 1st round pick then maybe BUT that is a bit to give up for an UFA but in hidsight they should have. Good answer.

I understand what you are thinking but here is something that you should realize....no way the Sabres would ship Biron to a team like the Lightning or Hurricane and risk having him come back to haunt them in the playoffs. I would bet either GM would have not only given up more than a 2nd rounder, they might have given somthing closer to a Forsberg type deal. The problem both of them faced was the fact that the only teams really shopping goalies were all in the eastern conference and none would want to make those teams a bigger threat to their chances of playing for the Cup. Neither must have had a big interest in CuJo (although I agree it would have been a possible upgrade), if they did I have to believe that the Coyotes would have moved him. So I dont think it was a matter of not trying, it was more likely that the teams that were willing to trade goaltending werent willing to maybe become victims of their former netminder (can you imagine how brutal the press in Buffalo would be if Biron went to the Lightning and they knocked out the Sabres.....Sabre management was smart enough not to give that possibility any chance of happening). I dont think it was so much that they were out of their minds for not trying....it was more a case of the other teams not being out of their minds and creating a bigger threat to their own goals.

Both were stupid. Besides Biron and Cujo, I'm sure either could have had Thibault considering he's UFA and gone after the season and the Pens picked up Schaefer to replace him next season. Hell, one of them probably could have traded for a former MVP in Theodore with Colorado willing to eat some of his salary being that Budaj's their goalie of choice. I'm sure Sean Burke could've been had as well.

And to everyone using cap space as an excuse...what are we talking about here 2 or 3 months salary? Not exactly millions of dollars...sorry that doesn't cut it as an excuse.

if i where TB GM to get Biron i would of traded Vaclav Prospal, Andre Roy, Marc Denis for Martin Biron, Nathan Paetsch and a 2007 1ST round draft pick. you need to give value for a pretty good goalie which TB clearly needs.

if i where Panthers GM to get Biron i would of traded Ed Belfour, Martin Gelinas for Martin Biron, Ales Kotalik
and a 2007 3rd round draft pick. Belfour might have a little something to offer. that would give the Panthers a little extra help up front and Biron in nets would be a +.

i thought you said TB and the Panthers, buts its TB and the Canes.

OK then. i i was the Canes GM to get Biron i don't think i would i do love Biron but Cam Ward had his ups and downs this year as most sophomore goalies do but i would look for more defence in Carolina then anything else i would probably try to trade Josef Vasicek, Trevor Letowski and a 2007 1st round draft pick to Buffalo for Nathan Paetsch, Derek Roy and a 2008 2nd round draft pick.

in addition to the above mentioned salary cap, do you think these "southern" GMs didnt try to make their teams better? Things dont always work out - you can't just make a trade unilaterally - just because a team didnt make a trade doesnt mean the GM didn't try. besides, most teams shudder at the thought of having to give up alot of young talent. teams dont want to subtract from the lineup they have already. so don't go off and say how these GMs are stupid when obviously no trade that they felt would help their team.

its called SALARY CAP. Both Caorlina and TB were at it Biron would of put them over. Philly was only one of actually a few teams that could of afforded him. Now if Miller goes down season over for the Sabers.

400k who the hell are you kidding? Read this and learn. http://www2.nhl.com/nhl/app?articleid=298229&page=NewsPage&service=page scoll all the way to the end 2.1 MILLIION! It was a CAP ISSUE I know my hockey.

MT got it right too sometimes the best deals are the one you DO NOT make.

Habitant you are insane. No decent gm would make an assassined trade like that.

Gee maybe because no team was willing to trade a goalie for what TB or Carolina was willing to give up? None of the Playoff teams are going to trade one of their goalies now unless they already have a third good goalie (Buffalo), and if a team didn't make the playoffs, odds are their goalies wern't all that great.

If their is a good chance you won't make the playoffs then there is no purpose to giving up players that are a part of your team or draft picks that you need to rebuild your team in the future, unless you are a complete and total idiot.
