try this

1- No need to install the Nokia Software, but if u need it for anything else feel free to do so.
2-No need to change the format, u could use normal Mp3 form any source, Limewire, Frostwire, iTunes, etc, as long as they're not protected.
3-Nop M4A does not work, sorry if I got some ppl confused about this.

So, into the solution, the only tool u need is the USB cable, if u lost it, use the one from ur Digital camera (well mine is a Canon so I'm fine, still most Digital cameras use the same type of Usb cables).

So hook the USB cable to the Phone, then hook it to ur pc or laptop, (haven't try Mac, besides I don't like it so don't ask :P ), after u hook the phone to the pc, WinXP will recognize the Phone as a USB mass storage device, which means the memory card not the phone itself, allow some time will u get the message saying that the "New hardware is installed and ready to use".
Then on the phone choose "usb transfer" or "Usb connection" (i don't remember exactly what it says).
After this everything is easy, just open a windows explorer or open "My computer", then look under "My computer" or whatever u name ur computer, u gonna have ur drives ( C:/, D:/, E:/, etc..) and almost at the end but before the control panel or shared documents u'll c the memory as "Mass storage" click or open this drive and inside there is going to be some folders, one is "MP3", thats where u put ur songs, so start draging and droping ur songs inside this "MP3" folder.

After ur finished, go down on ur task bar, where the clock on ur computer shows up, look for the green littl arrow, click with the left button of ur mouse (normal click) and from the list select the "Safely remove Usb Mass storage" that is assigned to the phone, must likely is going to have a letter which is the drive letter, after this unplug the usb cable and on the phone sleect exit or just go back or whatever is, I think the phone just go back to normal, so now go to the "Rogers" media player and use it.
