I just selected a place to move into may 1st so this is still fresh in my head. These are the things which were important to me:

1. Is it a non-smoking community?
2. Do they allow dogs? Are their breed/size restrictions?
3. Are they in ANY way low-cost housing (this was something i learned after beign inmisery for a year in my current apartments).. i hate to say it but low-cost housing might mean neighbors you don't want. Well, in my case it did.
4. How far from work?
5. How far from civilization?
6. A/C? Central Heat?
7. What utilities are you responsible for?
8. how much parking is available? is it covered? Assigned?
9. Is there enough storage space?
10. Dishwasher?
11. Washer and dryer? Hook-ups?
12. www.apartmentratings.com is a good place to read what other tenants have said about living there
13. Is the manager on-site?
14. Visit the neighborhood during the day AND at night
15. Is there a garbage disposal?
16. Lead based paint? Absetsos?
I can go on and on but I think you get the idea!

GET RENTERS INSURANCE! I can't stress this enough. It's low cost and worth it if something happens. I got mine through State Farm (who I also insure my car with). They gave me a great deal. I got a discount on my car insurance which was larger than the payment for the renters insurance. Pretty much, I saved myself $2 every 6 months and had both car and renters insurance. I think most larger insurance companies will offer something like this.

By mid March such a lot locations will have to have an attractive well proposal of a few of what's going to be to be had in May. Some of the April first transfer outs will want renovations and so forth and would possibly not be capable till May. Your window of possibility is March 15 through approximately April five.

make sure your apartment is close to work and to places you go like for shopping, library school, church, see what all is around. when you find the right location always remember if you have someone living above you , you will have noise especially if they have kids, so i recommend the top floor, if it is the top floor is there elevators or stairs how far do you have to lug up groceries and stuff alot to think about

One thing you failed to mention. Make sure you know what the neighborhood is like. Cheap usually means lower class areas. Good luck.
