Bryophytes are nonvascular plants, so they don't have any special tissue to carry water to all their cells. Water goes from cell to cell by diffusion, and that's pretty slow. So bryophytes cannot be very large.

Bryophytes do not have true roots for efficient water absorption. The leaf-like parts (no true leaves either) are very thin and dry out easily. So bryophytes must live in places that are relatively damp. They grow best in the shade.
