Yes, you're absolutely right -- the famous L'Originale Alfredo Di Roma in the Epcot Italy Pavilion is unfortunately closing on August 31, after more than 20 years in the park.
The good new is that -- according to Disney -- a new Italian restaurant will be coming to the Italy Pavilion at Epcot, though details have yet to be released on when it will open or what its concept or menu will look like. More good news, in case you were wondering, is that the closing of Alfredo's Ristorante will NOT impact the Epcot International Food + Wine Festival happening September 28-November 11 of this year, nor will any current dining reservations for the restaurant have to be canceled. The restaurant's closing will also not impact any other attractions within the Italy Pavilion or World Showcase.
Sad news, certainly, but the restaurant had a good run, having opened in 1982. And Alfredo's does have an established restaurant in New York in case you miss any of the dishes TOO badly!

It is most definitely closing. Disney released an article about this about a month ago in their corporate newsletter. They plan to replace it with a new Italian Restaurant, but no further info has been released. I, personally, am excited about the change. My husband and I loved Alfredo's about 6 years ago. The food and the service were amazing! But on a visit in June of 2006, the food was not at all as we remembered it and when we didn't pad the bill with alcohol, our watier literally dissapeared and the service was terrible. So hopefully something new and better will take its place!

Rumors have it that Disney wanted a faster turn around at Alfredo's, but the restaurant didn't want to change their ways and speed up service so Disney is letting them go.
Once again this is just the rumor that I heard...

I didn't know it was closing down but am not too upset. In recent years I was disappointed in the service and fare. Just think of it as a positive that we'll all be able to "pig out" on that yummy new food soon! :)

Yes, I've heard that too. From the looks of it, it is definitely true. I like that restaurant as well, so I will be upset to see it go as well.
However, they are going to be putting a new Italian restaurant in, I have my fingers crossed it will be any better ;-)
