I need to be in Napa, CA at 6 pm on a Wednesday. What time do I need to leave from Palo Alto to be sure of arriving on time? Google says it only takes 1 hour 40 minutes but I know rush hour will add some time to that...I just need to know how much. Thanks for any advice!

I would allow about 2.5 hours to get there. It is better to arrive early rather than late.

i would plan at least 2 - 2 1/2 hours. It doesn't really matter what route that you take wheather it is up the peninsula, 880 or 680, traffic is going to be a nightmare. I personally would take 680 to fairfield then 80 west/12 west to napa. I avoid going through san francisco at all costs and avoid going through berkeley on 80. I was in the city a couple weeks ago on a friday at 4pm and did not make it back to napa until after 7:30. There was much traffic on the bridges.

Whatever you do not take 101 north to Novato and then 37. 101 is the most insane traffic congested route possible. 680 route should be OK, you will meet traffic in Martinez at the benicia bridge, which usually starts backing up betwee 4:30 - 6:00.

Your going to have a rough drive ahead of you. I would add another hour to your time. I got stuck in rush hour traffic from Palo Alto and it took me over an hour and a half to get home, and I live near Richmond (which is about 30 min. w/o traffic, closer to you than Napa).

i used to commute from south san fran to san rafael.. 30 miles through san fran... Palo Alto is about 45 from ssf... it would average 55 minutes to get home... from where I life t napa at that time is at least an additional 75-90 minutes...

leave at 2 before the traffic, get there, find someplace to hang out for a bit and enjoy.

Avoid I-80 (bay bridge) at any cost, take 101, 92 and 880 instead. I know this might make the drive longer distance wise but it will be faster time wise. I'd add one hour to suggested driving time.

After this weeken and you have driven it. You get back to all of us. If you are from cali you know that traffic can be there one min and gone the next min.
