You know how the universe, is never ending, i mean, how does something go on forever. What all is out there, how big is it really, how do you go from one galaxy to the next. ITS JUST SO AMAZING, but i dont understand it, do you know what i mean....can anyone explain it at all, or is it just a wonder of nature we will just know nothing about?

Shelby, I know what is your situation? but i give a suggestion to solve it. I think i need not tell you about the universe.
But if i tell you the answer it can confuse. I have a religious thinking and scientific thinking. My holy teacher tells me if you follow the name of GOD and SCIENCE equally. you will be KNOWN to this mistry of UNIVERSE.

hello Shelby:

I am not surprised that you have a hard time getting your mind to grasp the vastness of space. Many people cannot and just make critical comments regarding the long and hard work of others to study the wonders that exist around us.

First of all...We are in a Solar System whose center, the Sun, is a star. The Sun is 93 million miles from Earth. 8 other planets with their various moons also orbit the Sun within our Solar System.

At night, if the sky is clear, almost all of the stars that you can see belong to the Milky Way Galaxy, and we are a part of that. The Milky Way Galaxy is shaped like a disk,1500 Light Years wide and maybe 1 1/2 light years thick. This disk has spiral arms within it, and we are located about one third of the way out on one of those spiral arms. Within the Milky Way Galaxy there are about 200 billion other stars with who knows how many planets and moons orbiting around each of them.

Now comes the good part... Beyond the Milky Way Galaxy there are thousands of other galaxies with each one containing billions more stars, etc., etc. This is usually where we loose people who are trying to understand space... Vast is not a big enough word to describe the hugeness of space. It goes on for billions of Light Years.

Ian Ridpath, author of ASTRONOMY, DK Publishing, NY, NY, reports that we are at the center of an observable sphere that reaches out 40 Billion Light Years in every direction. What that means is that we have the ability to see things out there at a distance of about 40 Billion Light Years, and beyond that our very best equipment fails to deliver any useable information to us. So we cannot "see" any farther than that.

Now 40 Billion Light Years is a very, very big distance. I don't know if it is never ending. However, since none of us will ever go there, and there is no way we will ever talk to anyone who has, it might as well be called infinite, or never ending... because we will never see much beyond that distance.

Take pen and paper and try to compute the number
"40 Billion Light Years" in Miles and you will begin to see
how truly vast that distance is. Compare it to the Moon which is located about 250,000 miles away from the Earth.

Regards,
Zah

The universe is a finite entity, one day it didn't exist and sometime in the future it will go out of existence.
It expanded initially and it may or may not be expanding now.
It is amazing and we may be one of the amazing things about it.
The universe started as an unknowing evolving entity and some way it developed the ability to become aware of itself.
We and others like us are it's consciousness it's eyes and ears.
It is amazing no matter what you know of it.

I definitely know what you mean. The funny thing is, the more we find out about the universe, the more of a mystery it becomes. It would be impossible to know everything there is to know about it. Have you ever seen pictures of clusters of galaxies? Our own galaxy has BILLIONS of stars in it.......and I've seen a picture from Hubble that shows probably 30 different galaxies in one shot! It's incredible.

Universe is really big and it is still expanding. It is nature itself. It has many mysteries. For example you could travel instantly from a given place and time to another place (and time!) if you pass through a Wormhole. We haven't seen any wormhole yet but they are already mathematically proven. Our knowledge about Universe increases every day but of course it is very difficult to discover everything about it. At least we are part of its glory...
