can block all those bad sites, but they keep letting all the spam into my email?

They try, but it's a different technology that drives each type of thing to work. The "bad" sites have a known list, a permanent home, and a fixed address; bad email is constantly changing.

To stop the 'bad' sites, the computers just match the site you want to see with a list of blocked sites. If it matches, you don't see it, if there's no match, you can see it.

However, the computers have to think about each email coming in and see if it fits a profile that would indicate "junk" or if it's a legit message. It's always changing, and most times the mail is allowed or blocked based on a "badness" score it receives from the scan.

It's like driving on the freeway. Bad sites, like he potholes in the road are known, and they are blocked or routed around. Spam, like idiotic drivers, are often confused with a confused granny, or someone that just isn't good at driving; you never really know what's happening until it hits you...
