Yes, but you do realize that technically we do not live in one. Matter of fact we are rapidly becoming a socialist state.
I agree with Blackacre on the point that ill-informed voters make for a poor government. That's why our founding fathers did not make Voting a right. That's right. Voting is not a right. It's a privilege. I believe that all voters must pass a citizenship test before they can vote.
Sgt. 524 makes a great point. Voters vote for those who will give them the most. Not who will do their best for the country.

Define 'best.' Democracies have proven themselves to be the best government for a capitalistic, developed state. States still in development may better benefit from an partial-autocracy that can single handedly manage all forms of the state's economy, althought there are also developing states that have done jsut fine under a democracy. Third world states really cannot have a democracy; they have mch more pressing issues than getting everyone's voice heard. They need to worry about food and water before other things.
I don't think that 'best' is a way to describe all governments. I do, on the other hand, think that people deserve whatever government best suits them. Everyone wants democracy because that's the only way most people will ever have any power, but, in reality, not every nation gets the most from everyone being able to control domestic and foreign policy.

Well, it only works if the people want it. Obviously, America was founded on the principles of democracy. But that is American version of democracy. Each country that claims to be democratic has their own version that aren't quite the same. If you go to Europe, which is democratic, their version is different from ours. They have a parlamentary system of government and democracy. And, they don't have the same constitution etc. If you go to the mid-east where no democracy exist except for the Israeli version, then you have people who really don't want American style of democracy. They want a form of Islamic government which is a theocracy and something different altogether. Is it democratic to force them to have our style of rule if they don't want it? Do we have the right to impose what we consider the best form of government on another people?

The United States does not have a democratic government we have republic.
The founding father were fearful of a democracy because of prior the model Athens.
For once the public realized they could vote themselves the treasury they do. After which the country will fall.

Of course democracy is the best form of government.
I do believe people deserve the best from government.
One thing is in a democracy people must participate. Not voting or not caring is fodder for totalitarianism. If only a few hundred more people had voted in Florida in 2000 we might not be in the mess we are in today.

The great British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill once said that Democracy is the worst form of Government - apart from all the rest! I guess that sums it up.

Nope: it is extremely inefficient and places too much power in the hands of people who are not educated about the issues.
A benevolent dictatorship is more efficient, generally speaking (although there are inefficiencies with any 1 party type system), though a small, highly trained and educated group would probably make for the best government.
Part of the problem is in defining "best".
Best for whom?
Best for me would be a dictatorship in which I was the dictator. Best for you might be different...

We are a republic. We have democracy. We elect others to represent us. I think it is the best system.
