I'm at a loss as to why anyone would buy a newspaper that treats its readers as idiots (i.e. the Diana stories on Mondays, the overexageration of weather stories, the obvious twisted headlines that most people can see through). The only reason I can come up with is that it matches their political beliefs, in which case there's a similar product in the Daily Mail. So why buy the Express?

(disclaimer: I have may have peeked in years ago to read Calvin and Hobbes on my paper round. But that is my only connection with the rag.)

Because it's THE WORLD'S GREATEST NEWSPAPER - says so right on the masthead. Although I think that's a fairly loose interpretation of 'world's greatest' - I think they really mean "UK's MOST OBVIOUSLY INSANE NEWSPAPER".

Why does anyone buy any of the tabloids?

Papers reflect the view of the editor more than the readers, if you have a pro government editor it'll take a lot before the paper starts bashing the government, and vice versa if the editor is anti government.
Quite why anyone would want to read a set of views that are basically somebody elses dressed up and called news is beyond me.

My cousin used to buy the Sun every day to do the crossword, if he completed it he'd celebrate and letch at page 3, whereas if he couldn't complete it he'd commiserate and letch at page 3.
I asked him why he wasted his money everyday on it "it's better than reading a book" was the best he came up with.

I work with lots of people who buy a paper every day for the sport coverage, some papers cover certain topics better than others, I suspect part of the reason is familiarity people buy the paper they've always bought: change scares people.

In fact to a certain extent you can extend this logic to all newspapers.
