The main idea of the Civil War was the abolition of slavery. But there are other points to be considered as well. There was the battle for states rights, preservation of the southern way of life(planter system) vs. the northern industrial experience and the preservation of the Union.

The Civil War had no main idea. Many believe it was fought because of slavery, when in fact that was only part of it (a large part, but still). Truthfully, the economic status of the country at that time played a large part as well. Google "Civil War Causes" and see what you come up with.

If you go to a government school, they may expect you to say that the civil war was about slavery, which is a bunch of crap. The Civil War was about state sovereignty; the south did not want to be at the bidding of some damn Yankee about anything!

The North states abolished slavery, and then tried to tell the South to do it too.

The South states were making HUGE amounts of money from slavery since it was all profit, they didn't have to pay workers. Obviously, they didn't want to give up their own little 'gold mine'.

They argued back and forth, and then the South decided that if the North wouldn't see it their way then they would breka off and form a new America. South Carolina was the forst state to drop out of the union, and the other south stats followed.

The North threatened to use armies to force them back into the union if they wouldn't rejoin willingly. The South didn't budge, and thus the war began: The South fighting for state sovereignty and profits form slavery, and the North fighting to reunify the country.
