What jobs are in the path of a career pharmacy technician?

Most people start out doing "retail". Retail stores are your local pharmacies like Walmart, Safeway, Osco, CVS, Walgreens, etc.

I work in a hospital pharmacy. I'm the Pyxis administrator for my hospital (and I'm only 21!). A pyxis machine holds all the medications (tablets, oral suspensions, IV fluid, etc). I also make IV fluid, compound oral medication, compound ointments, dispense medication and controlled medication (narcotics) and maintain the machines (just to name a few).

If you are looking to become a pharmacy technician I would HIGHLY suggest you work in a hospital if you can. I worked as a pharmacy technician (non certified) when I was 17 at Safeway and they paid me $8.00 an hour (retail sucks!). When I turned 18 I took the test and got certified. I now make almost $17.00 an hour working at the hospital I work at.

Good luck!

It's a pretty low level job so most start out there...if you're talking about working in a hospital, try a chain drug store first, like CVS or Wal-Greens or a place like Target or Wal-Mart. They all usually need help.

If you still can't get hired, you can always try getting a job first at the front store part of a drug store. Start off as a cashier or photo-tech and then after a while of good work there, you can request a transfer to the pharmacy. I know many people who have done that and gotten certified on their way.

You may work at a hospital. You may work at many of today's pharmacy chains such as CVS or Walgreen's or even discount store chains such as Target. Go to careerbuilder.com and search for "pharmacy technicians" in your area.

Dont start at the bottom when your looking for a job in your field. Retail stores pay very little while Hospitals will give more benifits and pay you extra.
