The Panthers are 6 points back with 5 games to play, and the teams they're fighting will be mired in their own battles. They have two more games against one of those teams (Carolina) as well as two more against the Capitals and one against the Lightning. If they win every one of their final five games and beat the Hurricanes in regulation in their two games...then the team that a friend of mine called the "toothless Kittens" could more than likely end up playing the Sabres or Devils in the first round of the playoffs. Does it happen?

No they can't jump all of those team. They don't have the talent to score goals except Jokinen. Plus Belfour is too old. Panthers have had bad luck the past few years and it will keep on going this year.

Most likely the Sabres, they wouldn't be likely to make it to 7th seed(and besides the Penguins are taking the Atlantic, hey I'm a Pens fan). They need so much help it isn't likely. Sure they could kill the 'Canes but you also have the Islanders, Rangers, Maple Leafs, Canadians all ahead of you by AT LEAST 4 points. Toronto and the Islanders still have 6 games, the rest all have 5. Then you look at the wins(first tie breaker is more wins). The Islanders and Toronto are the only ones with less then 38(best Panthers can do is 38). Toronto is at 37 and the Islanders are at 36. Florida basically needs a miracle to get in, and they aren't likely to get in. Keeping in mind they are 6 points out of 8th and the teams at that point already have over 38 wins.

No way.

1) They are not good enough to will all of those games in regulation. They have maybe a 40 to 1 shot at that.
2) Say they do win all of their games, for argument's sake. They still only have 90 points and only 38 wins, so they will not own a tiebreaker over anyone. They will finish ahead of Carolina but
a) the Rangers will most certainly finish with at least that. They have 87 points with 5 games left.

b) Montreal and Tampa Bay only need four points in their final five games to beat the Panthers. Or four points in four games for the Lightning if you exclude their game against the Panthers.

c) Toronto and the Islanders will need six points in six games to finish with 90 points.

That's five teams that need to finish with, at the most, a .500 record to finish ahead of the Panthers, even if the Panthers win out. If three of them to this, then the Panthers can do no better than 9th. Considering how many three point games there are going around, I'd be surprised if 9th place was any worse than 90 points.

Although they have come on strong recently, I don't think they will make the playoffs this season. The teams ahead of them are just too good. When you have a team like Carolina fighting for a playoff spot that should say something about the intensity of the race for the playoffs. It's rare that a defending Stanley Cup champion has to fight just to even make the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Either Carolina, Montreal, or the New York Islanders will end in the 8th seed.

It could happen. I wouldn't bet on it. What are the odds of the Panthers actually winning all of the rest of their games? Slim. What are the odds of them winning AND having FOUR of the teams ahead of them collapse at the end? Even slimmer. So not happening.

not anymore i went to the game on the 1st against carolina. those were the worst officials ever. they called a bad tripping penalty at the end when the guy dove on purpose. then belfour made fun of him and they got another penalty. they lost in ot. maybe next year

go panthers!!!!

umm... they need more than "help", they need a miracle somewhat equivalent to the odds of lightning (real lightning not Tampa Bay) striking the same place twice. There are too many teams fighting for the last 3 spots.

No, they do not get in.

No. Simply because they have no goaltending. Once luongo left the had Auld who is now injured and 40-year-old belfour's starting. Jokinen cant do it him self. Hes their only goal scorer. My answer is no
