I had better luck when I laid down with my two little boys for an afternoon nap.

Try playing some very soft music. And if you have any christian music, play that. Believe or not; it's a fact that christian music will calm children.
I always told mine, they didn't have to nap or go to sleep, they just needed to lie still and rest a while. 5-10 minutes, they were out like a light.

Place something that vibrates under his matress. It works in most cases.
