You have a handbook, or should, in your glove compartment. It will have all the specs you need to find the correct weight 10w30 or 5w30 or whatever it is. There is a dip stick you must look at to see if you need to add oil. There should be a diagram in the owner's manuel. You only add one quart at a time. If it's half a quart low, wait until it's a quart low. Better to run a little low on oil than over fill it. If, you can't figure it out, take it a garage and a pay 10 bucks for someone to check it and fill it for you.

any brand of oil that meets the newest specs of GF-4 will do. most common is 5w30 but you don't mention what year make or model car you have. could be 5w20 or 10w30. Look on the oil cap it should be imprinted on it or if not then look in the owners manual. By the way the W stands for winter. It means that the oil is suitable for winter conditions.

The best you can get is Mobil 1 synthetic. It lasts longer, protects better and holds up to extreme heat and cold better. 10W30 if it never gets below 0F there. 5W30 if it does. Don't let anybody tell you to use heavy oil like 20W50. It doesn't flow as well, takes longer to reach things when you start the car and doesn't get into tight spots as well.

as for the oil number, that's the viscosity,or thickness, most cars take 5W-30, i'm not too sure about 10W-30, but we run out of 5W-30 more often in our shop due to it's use in many vehicles, but 5W-30 is good because it's good in a large range of temperatures, as for the amount, it depends on the car, it should either be in the owner's manual or online. in the corolla that i own it mainly requires 5W-30, but 10W-30 can be used, but switched at the next oil change

Most cars and light trucks use 10W30. Don't use the cheap stuff, get a quality oil. (Unless your car is an old heap that just burns the oil)

Get good oil, not the cheapo stuff. quaker state or mobil 1, it should say what viscosity on your oil filler cap on your motor, or in your manual. if its a small engine i would use 5W30, if its a V6 or bigger i would use 10W30.

you should probably use a 20w50 grade oil. how much depends on the vehicle. some take as little as 3.5 quarts, some as much as 7.5 quarts
