I would think all the steam would make s bathroom a good [place for mold...especially if you have carpet. Is it? Is this a common problem? Why haven't we tried to come up with ideas to fix it if it's been around so long?

Yes it is a common problem.

Code now requires all bathrooms to have adequate ventilation, a window that opens or an exhaust fan. In cooler climates even if you have a window you should have a exhaust fan.
They have also developed 100's of mold removers, retarders. So I do think efforts have been made to reduce mold in homes.

Mold grows wherever...read anywhere... it has a nice moist place to grow.

The first and best defence against mold is ventilation. It will not grow on dry surfaces.

The cause of water being there varies, but mold growth is always due to excessive moisture.

In some homes and large buildings the builders tried to lower heating or cooling costs by sealing the building as much as possible to retain the original air. This means the air quantity is limited, and so it its ability to absorb water.

That means the water cannot evaporate fast enough to avoid mold growth, plus the air itself remains humid, and mold loves that.

Second recommendation...either get the carpet out of the bathroom or, if it is a small mat used when getting out of the tub, pick it up and hang it up after use to let it dry.

Mold lives in moist areas. Bathrooms are a fine habitat for it. Most building codes now require an exhaust fan in new homes unless there is a window in the bath. The fan should be run 30 minutes after the end of a shower.

Constant, warm moisture causes mold to grow. The solution is to get rid of the carpet, and get some ventilation going to take the moisture out of the bathroom after showering.
