There are many genres (i.e., rap, kiho'alu (slack key guitar), ha'i (falsetto), etc.) of Hawaiian music, so here are names of some "modern" (i.e., contemporary) groups/individual artists in our community:

Raiatea Helm, Britney Paiva, 'Ale'a, 'Ekolu, Sudden Rush, Cody Pueo Pata, Hoku Zuttermeister, Na Leo Pilimehana, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, John Cruz, Maila Gibson, Joy, Robi Kahakalu, Hawaiian Style Band, Keahiwai, Pure Heart, Ilona Irvine, David Kamakahi, Mihana, Darrell Labrado, Kaiolohia Funes Smith, Ata Damasco, Lei`ohu Ryder, Darlene Ahuna, the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Martin Pahinui, Sean Na'auao, Tony Conjugation, the Ka'au Crater Boys, Makaha Sons, and LOTS, LOTS MORE!!!

The beauty of Hawaiian music is the sheer variety. Please check out links below for examples and to hear the music of Hawai'i.

The first one that came to mind is Israel K'amikowiwo'le (not sure if I spelled that right.) He is most famous for his beautiful rendition for "Over The Rainbow" that they use in a lot of movies and TV shows (currently it is being used in Rice Krispies commercials, and it was on the episode of ER when Dr. Greene died of brain cancer.) It's a gorgeous song, and I plan on it being the song I walk down the aisle to in my wedding. Anyway, though, Iz, as he's known, is also the singer of many beautiful traditional Hawaiian folk songs, as well as a few new ones of his own. With groups like Pepper out there, how can anyone say that there is no good music coming out of Hawaii? Also, IZ is great (but he died)....there are many others...Hawaii (especially Kona) is still rockin...
